Best selling compact SUVs in 🇮🇳 India
Compact SUVs are among the best-selling vehicles in India, owing to their city-friendly nature combined with a full-fledged SUV feel at relatively low prices. SUVs have a well-deserved reputation. Compact SUVs, on the other hand, are the preferred alternative to mid-size and full-size SUVs due to their lower price. Most cars in the segment sell more than 5,000 units per month, and this was still the case at the end of 2023. Here are the top selling compact SUVs in India as of December 2023.

Tata Nexon
The Tata Nexon has been a huge success in India, thanks to its style, comfort, and, most importantly, safety features. The Nexon has always been at the top of this list, but this time it went above and beyond to become the best-selling car of the month. In December 2023, the Nexon with its petrol/diesel/EV variants sold 15,284 units, representing a 27 percent year-on-year increase. The Indian compact SUV received a facelift a few months ago in order to maintain its dominance, and the new Nexon is well-suited to that purpose.
The refreshed the Nexon is largely similar to the pre-facelift model, with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre turbo diesel engines. Both engines are mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed AMT. Nonetheless, the petrol engine can be paired with a 7-speed DCT automatic transmission, which has been well received for its smoothness. Furthermore, while the new Nexon has yet to be tested by the Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP, it is structurally similar to the previous model that received a 5-star G-NCAP safety rating.

Tata Punch
The Tata Punch’s phenomenal success paved the way for vehicles such as the Exter and Fronx. Nonetheless, the Indian compact SUV continues to lead this relatively new and unique segment, consistently ranking as Tata’s second best-selling vehicle. Along with this title, the Tata Punch became the second best-selling compact SUV and third best-selling car in December 2023, selling 13,787 units and growing by 30% year on year. What favors the Punch is the unparalleled value it provides. While the Tata Punch is the smallest car in the segment, its macho appeal, premium interiors, high-set seating, and high riding stance, which resemble those of a larger SUV, make it a compelling package. In terms of mechanicals, the Tata Punch has a 1.2-liter petrol engine that sends power to either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission. Furthermore, the Punch caters to CNG car buyers, being available in CNG-powered variants that deliver a mileage of 26.99 km/kg.
Maruti Suzuki Brezza
While the Tata Punch beat the Brezza in December 2023, the Brezza is typically the second best-selling compact SUV. With premium interiors, a plethora of features, and Maruti’s ace card – frugal and dependable performance – the Maruti Brezza meets the majority of urban car buyers’ needs and has established itself as one of India’s best-selling vehicles. Last month, the Brezza sold 12,844 units, representing a 15 percent increase over the 11,200 units sold in the same month in 2022.

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to either a five-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic, and it achieves 17.38 km/l in manual mode and 19.8 km/l in automatic mode, thanks to mild-hybrid technology. Furthermore, Maruti offers the Brezza in CNG variants, which provide 25.51 km/kg of mileage.
Hyundai Venue
Hyundai Venue is performing well for India’s oldest foreign carmaker. With 10,383 units sold last month, the Venue comfortably ranked among the top five-selling compact SUVs and became the best-selling Hyundai Car, surpassing the Creta. With such sales, the Venue increased its year-over-year performance by 25%. Hyundai has laden Venue with upmarket features and equipped it with refined powertrains, resulting in a premium experience that one would expect from a Hyundai vehicle. Furthermore, Hyundai has recently added the Level-1 ADAS safety suite, making it the first compact SUV with an advanced driver assistance system.

The Hyundai Venue has three engine options: a 1.2-litre petrol engine with a 5-speed manual, a 1-litre turbo-petrol engine with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch automatic), and a 1.5-litre diesel engine with only a 6-speed manual transmission.
