The top fuel-efficient petrol cars in India
India’s car buyers have always placed a high value on fuel economy and operating costs. But since gas costs in most Indian cities average just under Rs 100, it’s critical to drive cars that are economical with fuel and offer the best value. Although Maruti Suzuki has always been the industry leader in this area, buyers now have additional options thanks to the introduction of a few powerful hybrid cars from Toyota and Honda.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx/Toyota Taisor
The 1.2-liter, four-cylinder petrol engine powering the Maruti Fronx, a coupe-crossover variant of the Baleno, is shared by the vehicle’s hatchback sibling. This engine’s combined fuel efficiency is 22.34 kpl, with an ARAI claimed fuel economy of 21.79 kpl with the manual gearbox and 22.89 kpl with the AMT gearbox. A more potent 1.0-liter, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine is also included with the Fronx. This is marginally less efficient, returning 21.50 kpl when using the manual and 20.01 kpl when using the automatic, for a total of 20.75 kpl. The Fronx distinguishes itself with stylish coupe-crossover looks and a peppy turbo-petrol engine and its badge-engineered sibling, the Toyota Taisor, also has identical claimed fuel efficiency figures.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno/Toyota Glanza
The 1.2-liter, four-cylinder petrol engine found in the Maruti Baleno and Toyota Glanza can be paired with either an automatic or automatic transmission. The combined fuel efficiency of the manual and AMT versions is 22.64 kpl, with the manual versions claiming an ARAI-claimed fuel efficiency of 22.35 kpl and the AMT versions claiming 22.94 kpl. The gasoline engine is smooth and adequate for commuting; however, its midrange is weak and needs to be revved in order to pass. Driving is made easy by the smooth manual and light clutch, but the AMT falls short of class standards. Both of these models are slightly more efficient than the Fronx and Taisor combination thanks to their hatchback body style and slightly lower kerb weight.

Toyota Innova Hycross/Maruti Invicto
The 2.0-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine with the efficient Atkinson cycle powers both the Innova Hycross and Invicto. It is mated to a single electric motor that is fed by a 1.6kWh battery. With an e-CVT gearbox, the powertrain is mated to an ARAI fuel economy figure of 23.24 kpl. The gasoline engine comes on to recharge the battery or to provide a little extra power when the powertrain is starting on battery power by default. With the battery-motor providing electrical support, the petrol engine takes the lead as speeds rise. On the other hand, this powertrain prefers to be driven gently and dislikes being rushed.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire
The market’s best compact sedan in terms of fuel efficiency is the Dzire. Driving the Dzire manual has a claimed fuel efficiency of 23.26 kpl, while the automatic variants return a mileage of 24.12 kpl for an average economy of 22.19 kpl. Both versions are powered by the K-Series 1.2-liter, four-cylinder petrol engine from the older Swift. The Dzire is a good all-around car with a refined powertrain that produces respectable performance, a large, comfortable, and well-equipped cabin, and pleasant driving manners. But later this year, the Dzire is scheduled to receive a generation update, which will see it get the much more efficient new Z-Series engine from the new Swift.

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10
Right now, the Alto K10 is the most reasonably priced car in the nation and the fifth most fuel-efficient vehicle available. Although the Alto is no longer the bargain it once was, its 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine still manages an ARAI-claimed fuel efficiency of 24.39 kpl in manual transmission and 24.9 kpl in automatic transmission, for a combined average of 24.65 kpl. The Alto’s engine in particular feels very nimble and energetic, and the hassle-free ownership process is undoubtedly helpful, but the higher variants of the Alto are now fairly expensive for an entry-level vehicle.
